New Pentium® II Motherboard Family From Supermicro Support Accelerated Graphics Port
440LX-Based Boards First to Exploit Full Potential of Pentium® II
SAN JOSE, CA (August 25, 1997) — SUPERMICRO today announced six new 233/266/300 MHz Pentium II motherboards. Based on the new Intel 440LX chip set, the motherboards exploit the full capability of the Pentium II processor by providing EDO/SDRAM support, Accelerated Graphics Port (AGP), 33 MHz Ultra DMA, and Wake-On-LAN. The motherboards are PC98-ready for increased system performance, reliability and ease of use.
The motherboards, SUPER P6DLF, P6DLS, P6DLE, P6SLA, P6SLS, and P6DLH, are bundled with the 3D LABS AGP Graphics Accelerator as an option to provide users with a robust and reliable 3D graphics system with guaranteed compatibility.
The 440LX, on which the boards are based, is Intel’s newest and highest performing Pentium II chip set. "The 440LX is the first chip set to take advantage of the full performance capability of the 233 MHz, 266 MHz and 300 MHz Pentium II processors," explained Charles Liang, President and CEO of SUPERMICRO. "The 440LX supports AGP, SDRAM, concurrent PCI, and Ultra DMA 33 MHz. These features eliminate the limitations of the PCI bus on 3D graphics processing and significantly enhance multimedia operation. The SDRAM support makes these motherboards an ideal choice for both workstation and server applications."
The AGP specification, developed by Intel in cooperation with industry leaders, defines a high performance port that significantly improves the performance of 3D graphics and other visually-intensive applications for the next generation of Intel architecture platforms. The AGP bus provides a direct interface to main memory rather than burdening the CPU bus. The new SUPERMICRO motherboards support the 2X AGP mode for operation up to 532 MB/s.
All six motherboards are PC 98 ready, ensuring high-quality hardware that supports the most advanced Windows 95 and Windows NT features. Comprehensive PC health monitoring and System Overheat Temperature Control are provided through the use of National Semiconductor’s LM75 Digital Temperature Sensor and Thermal Watchdog and LM78 System Hardware Monitor.
PC 98 features include Microsoft OnNow ACPI power management, a slow blinking LED to indicate the system is in the sleep state, BIOS boot support for the USB (Universal Serial Bus) keyboard, and real time clock wake-up alarm. The motherboards provide a main switch override mechanism, and remote modem ring-on if the system is in a SoftOff state.
The motherboards all support PC health monitoring features including CPU fan auto-off in sleep mode, CPU overheat alarm and LED, hardware BIOS virus protection, and a switching voltage regulator for the CPU core. Chassis intrusion detection prevents system tampering. Additional PC health monitoring features include CPU/chassis temperature monitors, on-board voltage monitors, two fan status monitors with firmware/software control, SUPERMICRO SUPER Doctor and Intel Landesk Client Manager support, and system resource alert.
Included in the motherboard family are two single-CPU solutions (P6SLA and P6SLS) and four Dual CPU solutions (P6DLF, P6DLS, P6DLE and P6DLH). The P6DLH is I2O ready with an i960 RD I/O processor built in. The P6DLS, P6DLE, P6SLA, and P6SLS are ATX size (12" x 8.3"), the P6DLF and P6DLH are full AT size (13.8" x 12"). Five motherboards support up to 1GB of EDO, or 512 MB of SDRAM, and one supports 768 MB EDO, or 384 MB of SDRAM. All motherboards include Ultra DMA EIDE and USB ports. The P6DLH provides 9 PCI slots and 3 ISA slots. The others provide 4 PCI, 3 ISA and 1 AGP slot. In addition, the P6DLS and P6SLS include an on-board Adaptec 2940 UW Ultrawide SCSI controller.
Wake-on-LAN enables users to remotely manage the PCs in their network even if they have been turned off. Wake-on-LAN enhances remote management by enabling file updating and asset tracking on powered-off PCs. With Wake-on-LAN, remote PC setup, updates, and asset tracking occur after hours and on weekends so daily LAN traffic is kept to a minimum and users are not interrupted.
The 3D LABS AGP graphics board integrates robust 3D acceleration and MPEG-2 video acceleration to provide a high performance 3D graphics solution for Pentium II systems. With support for OpenGL, Heidi and Direct 3D application programming interfaces (APIs), the WinFast 3D L2300 AGP is designed to accelerate a broad range of applications including 3D animation, authoring, 3D VRML web browsers, CAD applications, 3D-intensive games and 3D presentations. The board features a highly pipelined 2D/3D graphics core, integral 230 MHz RAMDAC, and MPEG2 video playback acceleration.
Pricing for the motherboards at 1,000 pieces is:
- P6DLS $480
- P6DLF $400
- P6DLH $800
- P6SLS $380
- P6SLA $300
- 3D LABS 8 MB AGP Graphics Accelerator $210
Sample quantities are available now, with volume shipment scheduled for September, 1997.
